Wake’s Food Policy Council: Advancing Local Food Procurement 6/26/2024
CAFN Food Procurement Circle
Wake’s Food Policy Council, known as the Capital Area Food Network (CAFN), has a monthly Food Procurement Circle aiming to increase local foods into local institutions. One of our primary focuses is the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP), a nationally recognized initiative. We are closely examining GFPP values and standards to see how they align with our own goals for Wake County.
At our latest meeting, we had an insightful discussion with representatives from Duke Dining on the potential implementation of such a program in our region. We discussed the steps, precautions and potential challenges involved in integrating GFPP into local institutions.
Additionally, we are researching Food Procurement Policies from other parts of the United States, particularly those from counties with similar aspirations to ours. By reviewing and evaluating these programs, we aim to gather valuable insights and best practices that will guide us in establishing a successful program here in Wake County.
Our objective is to create a framework that supports local farmers, promotes sustainable practices, and ensures that the food served in our institutions is nutritious and ethically sourced. We look forward to collaborating with community stakeholders and other experts as we continue to develop and refine our food procurement strategies.
