Circle mission:

The mission of the Food Recovery Circle is to support the efficient use, distribution, and composting of available food resources in Wake County by discussing and mobilizing around the issues of food recovery through donation and compost.

Current Activities

  • Advocating for greater access to community-based composting

  • Promoting household-level education to prevent food waste

  • Supporting existing local efforts to rescue edible food

Past Projects

Wake Wasted Food Web

In 2022, Circle members held a series of virtual conversations, the Wake Wasted Food Web, to educate themselves about local success stories. The webinars were held on Microsoft Teams and 30 individuals participated in at least one discussion. The titles and guest speakers were: 

  • February 23: Adam Bensley, NC State University. Food Waste Diversion in Apartment Communities

  • March 23: Laura Wood, Lincoln Heights Environmental Connections Magnet Elementary. Food Waste Education Efforts

  • April 27: Mei Li, Food Waste Feast. Preventing Food Waste in Households

  • May 25: Ben Paulson, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Composting at the Food Shuttle Farm

  • June 22: no guest speaker. Topic: Explore Food Waste Solutions for Wake County

No Wake Food Waste

In 2017, Circle members collaborated with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to create flyers clarifying guidelines, tax incentives, and liability protection for food donation in NC.
