Food Plan Funding Awardees

Wake County Cooperative Extension (WCCE) was awarded $7.2 million from American Rescue Plan Funding for their Food Security Plan Update. In partnership with CAFN, WCCE plans to build capacity of local programs and partners and assess the suitability of health equity models for consistent county investment beyond 2025.

Strategy One: Food Hub Support - Farmer & Partner Aggregation

We provided $1,248,000.00 for five food aggregators in Wake County, helping them expand production, aggregate, and store products. This funding allows both aggregators and local producers to meet the rising demand for locally grown produce and farm products.

  • Across the Board Food Delivery

  • Firsthand Foods

  • Working Landscapes

Strategy Two: Communal Garden Support Grants

We provided $63,800 for 10 gardens in Wake County who wanted to expand their offering of fresh local produce to the neighbors and communities. The projects will expand production capacity, but also create more gathering space in areas with fewer green spaces. The harvest of these gardens is shared with members of the community most in need, or with a local food pantry.

  • Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC

Strategy Four: Pantry Innovation Grants

We provided $215,584 for 19 food pantries in Wake County to expand their operations both in quality and quantity. These projects will increase the number of vehicles available to pantries to make their own pickups, expand hours of operation to hours more convenient for pantry clients with busy work schedules, and most of all expanding cold storage capacity with over $101,000 of funding. More cold storage at pantries will improve the quality of food received, as it will allow for much greater storage of fresh product.

Strategy Six: Tailored Services Produce Prescription & Home Delivery

We provided $1,500,000.00 for NourishRx in Wake County. The NourishRX program will enroll 1000 clients to receive home produce delivery once per month. The produce is sourced from local farms and local aggregators to increase farmers sales.
